The New York of the Middle Ages
City of San Gimignano
San Gimignano, the city of beautiful towers, is located among the hills of the upper Val d’Elsa, in the northern part of the province of Siena, bordering the provinces of Florence and Pisa, in the heart of Tuscany. The city has been known since the early 900s for its position along the Via Francigena, which led pilgrims from Northern Europe to Rome, and reached its peak during the Middle Ages. Originally there were 76 towers, symbolizing the wealth of the most important families...
Today, 14 towers remain, which through careful preservation give the old town its distinctive medieval charm.

Food, wine and excursions
It is also famous for its countryside, cultivated with olive groves and vineyards producing Vernaccia di San Gimignano, already known in Dante Alighieri’s time, and Chianti Colli Senesi. Saffron is another local specialty, used in many traditional recipes.
The white dirt roads are perfect for trekking or mountain biking, allowing you to discover stunning views of the city and surrounding nature (vineyards, olive groves, woods), or to encounter small typical Tuscan villages or a simple medieval church.
